Mx. Kim Mendez has been involved in music, choral singing, and musical theater productions for over 30 years. Currently they are the section leader for the alto section for the Spanish language services at The Cathedral of Our Lady Of The Angels in downtown Los Angeles. They are now a part time professor for Rio Hondo College, currently teaching dual enrollment classes for middle and high school students in voice and music appreciation.

Beginning the fall of 2023, Mx. Mendez was thrilled to take on the role of Executive Director of the Adoro Music Ensemble. They have sung a variety of vocal parts with this stellar ensemble since 2022, performing a variety of chamber works including new and early music. The summer of 2025, Adoro has decided to become a singer collective and remove hierarchical structures for more collaborative models. They look forward to growing this incredible group and developing in their own musicality through this work.

Summer 2025, Kim is an Artist in Residence with Hogfish Opera where they are singing the role of Ljubica in SVADBA, a Serbian opera for six unaccompanied voices. They also have the opportunity to work on their own regenerative arts project. Kim has worked to create a choral soundscape that depicts what a shame spiral feels like, and uses music to break the cycle of pain it causes. It is based on the observation that many LGBTQIA+ people tend to be the cycle breakers in their families of origin, whether or not we want to be.

Operatic stage credits include principal roles in The Pirates of Penzance (Major General Stanley), the world premiere of Juana (Sor Rafaela), and as a genderqueer Baba in The Rake’s Progress. Currently, they are a staff singer with the Long Beach Camerata Singers and is looking forward to singing with their Catalyst Ensemble for three contracts this year, and in Handel’s Messiah this holiday season. Additionally, they performed on the Naxos recording of The Passion of Yeshua with the Buffalo Philharmonic that won the Grammy for Best Choral Performance in 2021. They enjoyed being one of the eight members of the Seraphic Fire Ensemble Artists in the 2021-2022 academic year, and learned so much, again with Seraphic Fire, at the Aspen Music Festival Professional Choral Institute this August. Other ensembles they have sung with as an ensemble member and featured soloist include Artes Vocales, and the West Coast Singers, The LGBTQIA+ Chorus of LA.

During the fall of 2023, Mx. Mendez was chosen as one of 25 participants in the BMP (Beth Morrison Projects) Producer Academy. The highly competitive, Mellon Foundation funded 8-week course includes instruction from industry experts in budget development, fundraising planning & execution, how to tour a show, pitching work to presenters, and production vocabulary & definitions; one-on-one mentoring with experienced creative producers; networking opportunities with professional producers and presenters in the industry; feedback on pitch materials and projects by high level industry presenters. Mx. Mendez aspires to produce trans/nonbinary/gender-expansive art with a focus on trans* joy, and the lived experience of trans people living at multiple intersecting identities.

Current other roles include alto section leader in the Spanish language choir at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Lead Educator with the Long Beach Camerata Children’s Music Academy serving multiple preschools throughout the Long Beach area, and as the Box Office Manager, also for LBCS.

Mx. Mendez has earned a Masters of Music degree (June 2022) from UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music, as well as a Bachelors of Music (June 2020), and an Associates Degrees in Music and Humanities from Pasadena City College (June 2018).
